Coming up with ideas for Calendar Art can be difficult. This is something that needs to reflect the students, be of a high quality and be something that is pleasing to the eye for a 12 month period.  To add student choice into the mix is just asking to over complicated the situation.  We finally settled on art that allowed us to explore line, shape and colour AND was something that look good.

This art required painter's tape.  One thing we all learned from this experience is that there is a reason that some things cost more than others.  In my defence, I am sure everyone can empathise standing in the un-named yet NZ owned and operated well known hardware store, looking at 2 options. Six rolls of tape for $60ish or 3 rolls of tape for $16ish.  Big price difference and ultimately too tempting for me.  I decided to get a single blue roll for $10 and 2 packs of the 3 rolls for $32ish.  The cheaper tape ripped the paper when removed.  The more expensive tape had a better finish than the cheaper tape.  So... I was sent off to buy some higher quality and higher costing tape.  However... the Delta Variant arrived on our shores.

Here are some of the practice creations Room 21 students made.

Chinese Language Week - Day 2 - Tuesday

In researching how to write Tuesday in "Chinese" I was aware there are at least 3 languages including Shanghainese, Cantonese and Mandarin. It's not as straight forward as that. Earlier, I chose a translation that I thought was dragon in a class activity today. The fluent Cantonese and Mandarin speakers in my class did not recognise the symbol. I was embarrassed that I had made a mistake which is one of the pitfalls of cross-cultural analysis. There are always positive outcomes for every situation and we were able to have a discussion about where the symbol may have originated. Another positive outcome is that I am extremely aware of my cultural limitations. So this will result in me asking more questions, seeking more input from experts in our class and in the community. As you can see, I was not confident enough in what I found on the internet to use it in my blog title. An opportunity for further learning. One of the challenges this week is to; LEARN - the signs o...
