Lockdown For Delta Variant

Day One Google Meet at 9am

This was the week we had prepared to host other Ako Hiko Schools as part of the Internal Study Tour. We had some great examples of teaching to showcase including;

  • Te Whanau Puawaitanga,
  • The Flexible Learning Environments of Rooms 11, 12 and 13,
  • The progress we have made on our DMIC Journey
  • The progress we have made in our Spirals of Inquiry Journey
  • Maker Space with our new Tinker Carts
Room 21 was humming along nicely. They cope very well when their teacher is needed elsewhere. Their teacher works very hard to minimise the impact of her presence/absence - you decide!

Monday was the date for my first vaccination shot - despite the claims from some of my class that I was eligible to register as a 60 years plus citizen!  I had that shot.  The Study Tour started well then...

Although we had been preparing for it, I was surprised how surprised I was by it. How off guard I was caught.  No toilet paper - truly!  No groceries.  But... the class had their chrome books. They knew the drill. The school had processes in place. Class sites were up and running. Blogging was under way. Chrome books were allocated and taken home daily.

I am very proud to be part of a school where we were able to jump straight into distance learning. We were in Google Meets and students were comfortable and settled.

  1. Hi Paulette, great post. I think we were all caught a bit by surprise and I agree with you, we have great kids here at New Windsor.

Chinese Language Week - Day 2 - Tuesday

In researching how to write Tuesday in "Chinese" I was aware there are at least 3 languages including Shanghainese, Cantonese and Mandarin. It's not as straight forward as that. Earlier, I chose a translation that I thought was dragon in a class activity today. The fluent Cantonese and Mandarin speakers in my class did not recognise the symbol. I was embarrassed that I had made a mistake which is one of the pitfalls of cross-cultural analysis. There are always positive outcomes for every situation and we were able to have a discussion about where the symbol may have originated. Another positive outcome is that I am extremely aware of my cultural limitations. So this will result in me asking more questions, seeking more input from experts in our class and in the community. As you can see, I was not confident enough in what I found on the internet to use it in my blog title. An opportunity for further learning. One of the challenges this week is to; LEARN - the signs o...
