Fun learning at the SPARK 5G Race Zone

We were lucky enough to be invited to enjoy a range of America's Cup based experiences at the  Spark 5G Race Zone . We looked at the different technologies used by Emirates Team NZ  in collaboration with   Genesis Energy  and  Spark .  Everyone had a great day and we got a small insight into the world of sailing and the technology that drives it.  Thanks to the parents who supported us on this trip. Thanks to Genesis who provided our transport.  Thanks to both Spark and Genesis for all of the effort put in to provide us with this fantastic experience.

Identifying our learning barriers

We have been learning to share our ideas in groups to solve Maths problems. This has been hard for some of us. It can be scary to share idea's and sometimes we feel nervous to make a mistake.   One way we are working through this is to identify some of the barriers that are stopping us form learning in Maths.  We created rivers with our barriers that we identified in the river.  Here are some of the rivers we have created. Our next step will be to choose one barrier and think about ways we could remove the barrier or work around it.  We will continue to work through each barrier until we have removed all of our learning barriers.

We are reading the book "Holes"

In this story, we read about digging holes that were 5 feet wide, 5 feet long and 5 feet deep.  We wondered how big that was and how long it might take to dig them. We used our chrome books to convert 5 feet into metres. We learned that 5 feet equals 1.524 metres.  We used this information to get a better idea of what size this hole would be. We used a metre long ruler to measure it out. Ms Corbett showed us how to measure 524mm. Then we wanted to know how deep 5 feet was. We drew lines on the whiteboard to show our estimates. When we used a 1 metre ruler to measure 5 feet (1.524 metres), all of our estimates were very close. We wondered how long it would take to dig a hole 5 feet deep. We timed ourselves for 10 minutes and then measured how deep we had dug in 10 minutes.   We dug 1.52 metres in 10 minutes.  In Maths, we used this information to calculate how long it would take to dig a hole that was 5 feet deep.  We worked in groups to share our ideas about how we could figure this ou
